Youth Mayor Lauren Davies (18) and Ethan Scriven (14) had the pleasure of awarding both Cyfartha High School Eco committee and Drugaid SORTED project with grant money to cover their young people’s exciting upcoming activities. The Gwirvol panel is run by Safer Merthyr Tydfil’s young persons’ project: Merthyr Tydfil Borough Wide Youth Forum. The scheme is allocated £3,200 per authority area and can be awarded to youth volunteering activities, identified, selected and carried out by young people aged 14-25.
Cyfartha high school will put the awarded money towards designing and building a greenhouse that is made from 2L plastic bottles, this will include a garden area where gardening clubs can be held to encourage the local community and youth to collaborate together and grow fruit and vegetables that will then when grown be donated to the homeless shelter in Merthyr to provide food for those in need.
The young people’s recovery group within Drugaid SORTED project are organising an even to launch the new Smart Recovery group within the local community. This event will promote the group and other services available to young people who are dealing with substance misuse/abuse problems, benefitting the organisation, communities and young people of Merthyr Tydfil.
Lauren and Ethan are both members of the Youth Lead grant panel, they have thoroughly the process of receiving applications, they will return to the projects in the coming future to see how they have progressed.
