Up and Coming is a young people’s project designed by young people for young people in Merthyr Tydfil and is an exciting opportunity to:
- Counteract the weight of negative messages about young people reported in the popular media by highlighting positive messages and at the same time reducing barriers to participation
- Recruit and train young reporters from all parts of Merthyr Tydfil to identify and explore topics that matter to young people and report on them to decision makers and others with a view to policy and service improvement.
- Help to strengthen youth participation in the borough by promoting its benefits, contributing to setting the policy agenda based on young people’s stories and enhancing and complementing the work of the Merthyr Tydfil Borough Wide Youth Forum (MTBW Youth Forum).
Up and Coming will engage in a range of outreach activities, including with some of the hardest to reach young people in the borough, in order to introduce the project to them, recruit new members to the MTBW Youth Forum and as Young Reporters. We will offer Young Reporters training in media skills including investigative journalism and launch a campaign of positive messages about young people in Merthyr Tydfil that will influence decision makers and enhance young people’s interest in and experience of participation.
Funded by the Big Lottery, Up & Coming is one of the seven projects under the Merthyr Tydfil Community Voice Portfolio – MAGNET (Merthyr Achieving Greater Networking and Engagement Together).
