Children & Young People's Programmes
Participation Service
Safer Merthyr Tydfil delivers the Participation Service on behalf of the Children and Young People's Partnership of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. The Service provides opportunities for the young people of Merthyr to participate and have their say on issues that affect them
.
Participation is all about empowering young people to get involved in their communities on every level.
The Merthyr Tydfil Borough Wide Youth Forum’s vision is 'to champion the right of children and young people to be heard and respected and for their views to have impact'.

“Take 2” Youth Mentoring Scheme
Become a volunteer mentor and make a difference
“Take 2” recruit, train and support volunteers aged 19+ to help and support young people at difficult stages of their lives on a one to one basis in the local community.
If you have 1-2 hours per week to spare and would like the experience of working with young people and also gain an Agored Cymru qualification with the opportunity to access extra training, contact Sarah Roper on (01685) 353999.
School Based Mentoring
The children and young people’s team, in partnership with local comprehensive schools recruit volunteers from year 12. Accredited training in mentoring skills provide the mentors to help and support the new intake of year 7 pupils. This makes the transition from primary to secondary school a smoother and happier experience.
In 2010, 40 school based mentors were recruited and trained to mentor 40 year 7 pupils in the following comprehensive schools; Afon Taf, Bishop Hedley and Pen Y Dre. Thanks to all of the school based mentors who took part in the scheme together with the school staff that assisted in its successful delivery.
